In our recent weekly church website blogs, we have been promoting and explaining those missions and ministry groups that we support in our yearly financial budget, as well as with prayer. We have already looked in these blogs at Cornerstone Counselling, Restored Ministries, the Mustard Seed, Adeara Recovery Centre, the Pregnancy Care Centre, and Gull Lake Camp (a camp run by our denomination, The Canadian Baptists of Western Canada). Today, we are looking at the ministry of Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship (specifically at its work at the University of Alberta).
At the U of A, Inter-Varsity has three distinct ministries: among undergraduate students (https://ivcf.ca/campus/connectoncampus/uofa/), graduate students (https://ivcf.ca/campus/connectoncampus/uofa/grad/), and, international students (https://ivcf.ca/campus/connectoncampus/uofa/inter+national/) and www.ifgedmonton.org. Our church’s connection has been mostly with the international student ministry, which is led by James and Ann Siebert. Drawing from their website, here are some of the things to know about IVCF: Through weekly Bible Study groups, Leadership Development events, times of prayer, weekend camps, and the building of community, university students (and staff) hear about Jesus – and people are giving their lives to serving and following him. The IVCF ministry is on campuses all across the nation, but our support is specifically for the U of A ministry. From their website, IVCF says this: “We love students. More important, so does Jesus. That’s why we’re on your campus.”
One need for the beginning of September is items for their FREE store. Here’s a list of needed items:
- Twin sheets & blankets, pillows
- Winter clothes: Boots, toques, scarves, mittens, gloves, coats
- Newer towels
- Dishes, silverware, pots & pans
- Rice cookers
- Lamps
- Household decor
- Microwaves, beds, dressers, nightstands
- Mirrors

Our Southgate Baptist Church family has had a long association with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship through finances and prayer, volunteers, and the occasional large meal and fellowship time. We are pleased to be able to continue to support this ministry. May the Lord bless them richly.
