Outreach and discipleship are the goals for Children, Youth, and Young Adult Ministries here at Southgate Baptist Church. The goal of outreach can be summed up by Jesus’ words in Matthew 19:14, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (NIV). The goal of discipleship can be summed up by the words of Solomon in Proverbs 22:6, “train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old he will not depart from it” (KJV).

At Southgate Baptist we believe these goals are best achieved in relationship. As we strive to engage with families in love and friendship, we seek to foster relationship with Jesus above all, including an emphasis on teaching the scriptures which are God’s inspired Word and primary means of revelation to us. 

Children’s Sunday School

Our Children’s Sunday School programs run from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. The goal is to educate children and youth in the knowledge of Jesus, the Christian faith, and the scriptures. New arrivals are always welcome, and our teachers attempt to model the love and encouragement of Jesus as they deliver their lessons.

The resource adapted for the junior classes is “kidssundayschoolplace“. The resource adapted for the youth class is “Walking with God and His People” by Christian Schools International (CSI).

The Youth Class is geared towards children in Grade 7 and above. This class focuses on engaging with the material through Bible study and discussion. The goal is for students to learn what the Bible says, how it all forms one big story of creation, fall, and redemption, and what that means for our lives today. In addition, this is generally the class in which children begin to consider Baptism, which is their public declaration of their commitment to Christ. 

The Elementary Disciples Class is tailored for children in grades 3-6. This class requires children to be able to read relatively well in order to follow the flow of activities and scripture readings. The Bible study portions are interspersed with other activities centered on the Biblical content, such as crafts, games, songs, and discussion.

Preschoolers, Kindergarten, and early elementary students are placed in the Beginners Class where they hear stories about the bible and are taught songs. The Bible stories are enriched with crafts and other activities which are tailored depending on the needs of the class.

Please note that Nursery assistance may be provided upon request for children who cannot meaningfully participate in Sunday School activities or are under the age of two.

More Children, Youth, and Young Adult Activities

In addition to Sunday School, Southgate Baptist offers a number of activities and ministries for young people of all ages.

Southgate runs youth events for children in 10 and up, as well as family youth events in which younger children are encouraged to come alongside their parents. There are also church family events, such the summer picnic and fall fest, in which the entire church family including any visitors are invited. Southgate runs the Vacation Bible School program in July of each year. Vacation Bible School is a free afternoon of fun activities for children ages 5-11, in which the gospel message is taught through immersive storytelling, songs, crafts, and games. Beginning in 2026, Southgate sent a team of youth to the CBWC’s Serve. This year they went to Wetaskiwin to help the community via service projects and grow closer to God through worship services every evening. See below for a slideshow recap of our group.

At Southgate, safety and protection of our children is of the utmost importance. All volunteers working with children have undergone background checks and are encouraged to enter regular leadership meetings.
